Dogs bark for many different reasons. Most of the time a dog or puppy barking will not bother people but when the barking gets louder and longer then it becomes a problem.
Thankfully with training you can teach your dog or puppy not to bark, at least when you do not want them to. The first thing we need to do is figure out why the dog or puppy is barking in the first place.
There are many reasons why dogs bark for example;
The funny thing about training a dog or puppy not to bark is you will need to get him to bark in the first place.
Most dogs will bark when someone comes to the door so this is the example we will use. Remember to have plenty of treats with you.
Think of a command you would like to use to tell the dog or puppy to stop barking, something like"be quiet" or "enough" , and make sure all other family know and use this command.
Have a someone ring the door bell and let your dog bark for a while. Then say "enough" and let them see or smell the treat.
The treat will grab their attention and the dog or puppy will stop barking.
Try getting him to stay quiet for about 10 seconds before giving him the treat, if he barks again before that do not give him the treat.
After a few minutes try the exercise again if he does not stay quiet for 10 seconds and get him to stay quiet for maybe 5 seconds or so.
Practise the exercise a couple of times each day and if your dog or puppy does as you ask then give them the treat each time.
As time goes by you can try and lenghten the time between you giving the command and the dog or puppy staying quiet, this will help teach them that not barking will earn a treat for staying quiet.
As always remain calm and assertive when training your dog or puppy. If you are tired, upset or angry then your dog or puppy will know and training in this state of mind is a bad idea.
