Most dogs are hardy and healty, bright eyed and full of energy. The following tips will help you decide if your dog is in good health. Check the following list of vital areas and if your dog is showing some conflicting symptoms bring him to your vet for a check up.
Abdomen: Should taper away towardds the back legs. It should not be sensitive to the touch and should not be swollen or bloated.
Rear end: Should be clean and free from any faecal matter and should not be swollen. The stools the dog passes should be fairly firm. If the dog is dragging his behind on the ground then most likely he will need his anal glands emptied. This simple job can be done by the vet quite easily.
Appetite: A healthy dog will eat his food in a lively manner. You should notice that your dog will eat most of if not all of his food. If the dog does not eat any of his normal food then he may be ill and will need to see the vet.
Breathing: A dogs breathing should quiet and even while he is resting. A dog will pant if he is too hot. If your dog is coughing then you should take him to the vet right away.
Coat: A dogs coat should be clean, glossy and free from loose hair and dirt or parasites.
Ears: A dogs ears should be clean with no dark wax or redness. If your dogs ears smell or just do not look right then he may have an infection and will need to be treated by a vet.
Eyes: A dogs eyes should be bright and clear. It is normal for dogs to have a little discharge but too much is a sign of an infection and needs treatment by a vet.
General Manner: You know your dog best and how he behaves. If you notice anything different about his behaviour or actions thing he may be ill and need to see the vet.
Movement: A dog should have a nice even gait. The dogs weight should be spread evenly over all four legs.
Nose: A dogs nose should feel cold and damp while he is outdoors and warm and dry when inside. There should never be any discharge from the nose of a dog.
Teeth: A healthy dog will have strong clean teeth. The gums should be pink in colour.
Skin: The skin of a healthy dog should be supple and clean. There should be no swelling, cuts or sores.
