The things you should buy for your new puppy

Altough there is a huge variety of equipment available with which to pamper dogs of all shapes and sizes the basic equipment needed to make your puppy or dog comfortable and safe is quite limited.

At the very least a your puppy will need a collar and lead, a comfortable sleeping area, a few items for grooming, bowls for food and water and some toys.

Dog collars are available usually in leather, nylon, cotton and metal in a wide range of styles and prices. When buying a collar for a puppy a cheap nylon type one should do as they will soon grow out of it. You should attach some sort of identity tag to it with your contact number. I think it is a bad idea to put the puppys name or your name on it. You should just get a normal lead as the retractable ones actually encourage your dog to run ahead of you which is not the behaviour you want. When your dog has a collar on you should be able to fit two fingers underneath it and it should not be able to come over the puppys head.

From the begining a puppy should have its own area for sleeping. This should be away from draughts and be warm enough for a dog. It is recommended to get a metal crate and this should be big enough for your puppy to move around in. In this cage you can place the puppys bed, his bowls for food and water, some toys and plenty of newspapers for those inevitable accidents. You should not use wicker type baskets because they are hard to clean and of course no doubt the puppy will chew on it.

All dogs will need grooming and it is best to get the puppy used to this from an early age. The types of equipment you will need will really depend on the breed of dog you are getting as their coats vary greatly. At the very least you will need brush and comb and the breeder you buy the puppy from can tell you which ones are best. You may need to buy a basin for washing the puppy in while he is very small. When washing a young puppy it is best just to use slightly warm water and do not use shampoos or conditioners.

When choosing bowls for you puppy again there are various types like metal, ceramic or plastic. You will not need a very big bowl but it should stay in place while the puppy is eating. For instance if you are using a plastic bowl on a ceramic surface then it may slide around the floor. Consider either buying a heavier ceramic bowl or maybe a cheap mat to place under the bowl. Always clean the puppys bowl after use and change their water every day too.

Puppies are naturally inclined to pull, chase and tug on things so if you do not want your home and belongings destroyed invest in some toys. Make sure that toys are well made and that they are too large for a puppy to swalow. Rubber and rope toys are ideal for indoors and frisbees, rubber balls rope tug toys are great for outdoors. Chewy foods can also be used as toys for your puppy but again make sure they cannot swallow them and always watch your dog while he is playing or chewing.
